WHY ALLOTMENTS?
Allotments are far more that a patch of land, they're a vital community lifeline.
They provide a sanctuary where people of all ages and backgrounds can take a moment to find calm, alongside fellow growers. Connecting with nature is a huge part of what our allotments offer and we have a particularly pretty set of allotments, surrounded by trees, green space and lots of wildlife. From improving mental wellbeing to offering regular, low-impact exercise, having a green space to nurture is proven to do wonders for health and happiness.
Beyond personal wellbeing though, our allotments play a crucial role in supporting Bude’s environment and local resilience:
Zero Food Miles: Growing seasonal fruit and vegetables means fresh, nutritious produce with zero plastic packaging and zero transport emissions.
Protecting Green Space: With so many solar farms and new housing taking of green space, our allotments will be protecting our little patch forever, once the purchase is complete.
A Haven for Wildlife: Chemical-free plots, compost heaps, and diverse plant life provide vital habitats and forage for local bees, birds, and pollinators.
Community & Connection: Allotments bring neighbours together. They are places where skills, stories, tools, and extra harvests are freely shared across generations, tackling isolation and building true community spirit.
Learning for the Future: Teaching children and novice growers where real food comes from instils a lifelong respect for nature and sustainable living.
By purchasing this land as a community, we aren't just saving a set of garden plots, we are securing a healthier, greener, and more connected future for Bude.
